The History of Trophies

Trophies have taken many guises over the years - indeed they have come a long way from the trophies that used to be picked up in battle, human parts of the conquests!

In Ancient Greece the winner would receive a wreath of some sort to depict victory and in Ancient Rome it would typically be in the form of tangible gifts like money or land.

The commonality however is that it tends to be a tangible object that has been given as a reward for completion of a successful task or accomplishment. In more recent times, trophies have taken the form of physical metal trophies, medals, rosettes, tankards, plaques and plates. Quite often, where a team wins a trophy to be kept by the collective, participants also receive smaller medals to be kept individually.

With the widespread media coverage of sports in the 1900s and 2000s we all now contain very strong images of Bobby Moore holding the Jules Rimet Trophy in 1966, players of Manchester United, Liverpool and more recently, Chelsea, holding aloft the football trophies won in the European Champions' League. My most recent image is that of Serena Williams holding the Wimbledon Ladies' Championship plate in the air.

My trophies
Personally, most of my individual trophies have centred around my childhood. When playing sports I was fortunate enough to win trophies for player of the year and top goalscorer amongst others. The sense of achievement you have going up at a young age to collect your trophies for outstanding achievement is a childhood memory that lives with you forever.

I also managed to be part of many teams that have won cups, medals and trophies over the years, particularly for success in football. This continued through my adulthood, although I must confess most of these trophies tended to be used as good doorstops!

My old trophies are reused nowadays when I play with my little boy, who is five as prior to the start of any game of football we play, we have a trophy on the side and the winner gets the opportunity to hold the trophy aloft. Of course I let him win a fair bit so he can feel the excitement of holding aloft his winning gift - hopefully it gives him a taste of what it feels like to be successful and victorious and thus providing motivation for him to go and win his own medals and trophies in the future!
